Bedding
Ferrets spend a great deal of their time asleep, up to twenty hours a day in winter, and it is important that their bedding is warm enough for them to maintain their body temperature in cold weather. Many ferrets are provided with hay, straw, wood shavings or shredded paper as bedding material but it is doubtful if these materials offer sufficient warmth in winter.
In addition, minute pieces of such materials can gain access to the facial passages during sleep, causing irritation and abscesses which are difficult – and expensive – to treat successfully even with antibiotics and surgery.
A better, cleaner and ultimately cheaper option is a padded sleepsack which is warm and easy to wash. These can be purchased commercially or made very cheaply from old continental quilts, sleeping bags, fleeces or other warm material.
FACT - It is better to spend a small amount of money on providing sleepsacks than a large amount of money on veterinary bills incurred through using cheaper materials
