Feeding

Ferrets are carnivores and like all animals require a balanced diet including protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, minerals and vitamins. Ferrets need at least 30% protein and up to 40% fat to meet their particular requirements.

  • Protein is needed to maintain muscle and tissue.
  • Fat and carbohydrate both provide heat and energy
  • Fibre is essential for healthy digestion
  • Minerals and vitamins maintain healthy teeth  and  bones  and   both promote and maintain healthy growth.

There are many excellent complete ferret foods readily available from pet centres. These have the advantage of being  scientifically constituted to provide an easy method of feeding appropriately, and because they are dry foods do not attract flies or maggots. Ferrets also enjoy fresh meat and a variety of treats such as raw eggs.

It is strongly recommended that at least some complete food is included in the daily diet.

Although ferrets generally eat twice a day, except for treats, it is recommended that they are provided with complete food in a weather-protected container and available together with clean water on demand.

Ferrets are unlikely to eat more than they require.

FACT - Ferrets cannot live on bread and milk which is seriously deficient in the required nutrients
