Handling Your Ferret
Ferrets should be handled gently but firmly. Hold your ferret by placing your middle finger and index finger either side of his neck. Your thumb and third finger will fall naturally around the legs, supporting the ferret on the palm of your hand and forearm.
Ferrets may bite because of pain or fear and nipping or play-biting is normal for ferrets who test things with their teeth. It is when a ferret bites hard and refuses to let go that there is a problem.
If your ferret nips when picked up try not to react with quick movements or a loud voice. Instead, offer titbits of food and stroke him gently whilst he eats.
Like all young mammals ferret kits believe the world was made for them to try out their teeth. They are not displaying viscious behaviour, just bad manners and they must be taught, kindly, that such behaviour is unacceptable. A firm “no” is usually all it needs to teach them to change their ways.
