Housing

Ferrets sleep long hours but when awake they are very active, curious and intelligent. They dig extremely well, climb easily and can squeeze through incredibly small spaces. Put these traits together and it is easy to see that their housing requirements demand ample space, security and toys to keep them amused.

In winter ferrets need protection from the elements and in summer the benefit of a cool, shaded area to escape from direct sunlight.     Heat    prostration  occurs at a temperature of 32C and sometimes less. In either case the housing should be secured on to paving slabs or concrete.

Ferrets are wonderful escape artists and have very little sense of direction. If they escape or are let out of their court without supervision it is probable that they will wander off and fail to return. Consider having your ferret microchipped as vets and rescue centres routinely scan stray animals.

FACT - Many ferrets live in impossibly cramped conditions with no space to run, jump and play.
